Student engagement with summer reading has been shown through considerable research to be invaluable to overall academic progress. Summer reading provides students with the opportunity to learn about themes that will be explored in the coming year as well as to discover the types of books that they enjoy reading for pleasure. The books selected for summer reading are chosen based on a variety of factors, including literary merit and student appeal. Literature reflects a multitude of perspectives and offers a safe place to consider a wide range of opinions and life experiences; however, not every book is the right fit for every child. We encourage parents to discuss the available choices with their children, so that students and parents can find books that are a great fit and engage in conversations about reading. Parents who are curious to learn more about titles may seek reviews from their favorite bookseller, Goodreads.com, or Common Sense Media.
The English department will finalize the instructions for the summer reading assignments by April 15, 2019.
